The Black Sun or Sunwheel is a symbol created by the Nazis in the late 1930ies, an arrangement of 12 sig runes or three swastikas. It was applied to the floor in a gathering hall in the Wewelsburg, an important base and education center of the SS. It was built by forced laborers from a near concentration camp.
The symbol did not play a big role on Nazi flags or logos during WW II, but has been established as an indicator for right wing extremist groups, organizations, individuals afterwards and it is widely used in the right wing extremist scene in general, especially in Germany since it is not banned by law as the swastika is.
Sometimes it is said that its origin lies in earlier heathen or Norse cultural history which is not correct.
